episode by saying we had a lot to talk about in regards to Miss

Davina Porter because we've been talking about her character and

and kind of the the behavior that she has displayed against
00:01:24
Ellen over the last couple of episodes.

And we've really been complaining.

Like we need to know the story. We need to know exactly what

happened between her and Lord Lovett.

Well, I guess the showrunners, we got it.

Everybody was thinking that because we got in in this

episode. And one of the things I think

that I appreciate about this episode is that it really does
00:01:48
show us how complex it was to be a woman in the 1700s.

Because going back to our previous conversation about like

Jacosta and Ellen and then thinking about Davina and the
00:02:02
way that she's been with Julia, there's never just a clear cut
00:02:10
reason for their behavior, for the things that they do and the
00:02:14
decisions that they make. And I think this episode kind of
00:02:18
spells it out. So I don't know if perfectly is
00:02:22
the word I want to use, but it's like it makes you really look at
00:02:25
this character, you know? So the episode starts out with

Julia finding out that her waters have broken.

She is in labor. We do get her being able to talk

to Brian. This is the first time that
00:02:41
she's really had a chance to see him since he left for Beltane.

And she's able to tell him, look, this is not your father's

child. This is just something I had to

say in order to protect the life of my baby.

She was like, you know, I think, you know, one of the things

about Julia in the show is we see that she does have a lot of

respect for Brian. And again, that is one of those

friendships that are that is coming out of the show that I
00:03:10
was not expecting, but I'm glad to see it.

So I'm glad she had a chance to clear the air with him so that

he's not angry with her. And now, you know, we move on to

the birthing part. And, you know, he tells her he

was like, well, I'm glad you. I'm glad you told me this.

You need to be prepared for when you go into confinement.

with pregnancy. And so they made the women stay

away for a long time. But it's typically women who are

able to be confined because I'm sure the women who didn't have

the opportunity to have like workers and people to take care

of their household probably couldn't do this.

But for the most part, back in the day, like in a lot of the

old school movies and stuff, women, they would they would

show them always having to be like separated from the people

because they to a certain degree, they were unclean and

men. They didn't need to be around

public for a while until their healing was getting better and

And because they, I mean, everything related to women's

bodies and giving birth and periods, all that stuff has just

child. This is a blessing event, blah,

blah, blah, blah, blah. They're being all nice to her

and everything. And I don't know, something

about it just wasn't sitting right in my soul.

Yeah, all of a sudden it turned into, what was that, The

Crucible? So quick, so quick.

And it was because of, again, Miss, Miss Porter.

Now, the interesting thing about this episode is we do get

flashbacks into Miss Porter's background and into her own
00:06:43
experience as a single mother, as a birthing mother.

And, you know, we get to see kind of what happened.

So we know for a fact that she was forced, that is, that has

that question has been definitively answered now,

because we do see a flashback of her younger self.

She doesn't look like she was young young, but she probably

was like maybe around 1819. I would guess around the age or

she could be a little bit younger, but she looks older.

fireplace over there. And of course he's making these

overtures to her. He even sounds gross trying to

disgusting. So he calls her over to the bed

and, you know, he's being very obvious that he wants her to get

in bed with him. And she's like, but what about

my chores? What about, you know, stocking

the fire and blah, blah, blah. She's, you know, she's trying to

put them off and he basically gives her the look and he he

says come here, come here. I said come here.

So he's basically telling her she has no choice.

Now when he gets her to the bed and she like gets ready to climb

over him. This is very swift, is very

fast, OK. He's literally like forces

himself in her right then and there and he rapes her now.

You just you just felt bad for you all the instance of what is

happened to her. But then the complicated stuff

comes after that because the next flashback that we see of

He corners her in the hallway to try to have his way with her

again, and she's trying to put him off.

changes in her demeanor. And I don't know if it's just

that she's thinking, OK, I need to protect myself.

this is going to, it could be that when he said that, she was

probably like, OK, I do. But I don't think it was in the

One thing about the women in this time, and we've talked

about it, they have a lot of complications when it comes to

them, their status, their everything.

This is a young girl who has already been ruined.

on her face, not because she was ever in love with this man, but

respect back. And the fact that he just kind

Even after the stuff. So they keep mentioning a Miss

Amelia and I feel like that Miss Amelia might be the noble woman

that he was accused of kidnapping raping.

Davina worked for her. And then when she, when, when

the, when her Handmaid's Tale grouping was, you know, cursing
