The Fandom Hybrid Podcast would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to our very own Michael, who is celebrating the big 5-0 milestone! Enjoy your day!!!
Happy New Year from the Fandom Hybrid Podcast! 2020 is now firmly in the rear-view mirror, and I think we speak for all when we say “good riddance!” All of us at the FHP are looking forward to seeing what 2021 has in store for us. However, 2020 wasn’t all that bad – there were a few good things to come out of that dreadful year.
Let’s take a look at what is, what was, and what’s to come.
From friendship, love of fandom, and boredom, a podcast is born. The Fandom Hybrid Podcast launched at the end of September 2020 and was born from a combination of two things: a love for talking about all things fandom, and a boredom of being stuck in the house due to a global pandemic. With movie theaters being closed and fan conventions cancelled because of Covid-19, I needed to find some way to continue my love of fandom in the midst of all of the craziness. After years of blogging and guesting/co-hosting for other outlets, I finally took the advice of my friend Cat (creator and hostess of the Sci-Fi Party Line Podcast) and made plans to launch a podcast of my own.
After putting out some feelers for friends of mine who were interested, I found three others that I knew would be a great fit: Michael – an old geek friend from high school who I’ve known for 30+ years; Anthony – a friend and co-worker that has also appeared on SFPL (and who ran the first website I ever blogged for); and Lorrie – another former blogger/podcaster that I met through SFPL and a mutual friend, Darrell Taylor of the Taylor Network of Podcasts. These three are all people with whom I have enjoyed hours of conversation about a myriad of subjects in TV, film, and books, and even though none of them knew each other, I knew that they would all mesh well together once we hit the record button. However, since none of them are currently caught up or interested in The Walking Dead universe (gives them the side eye), my friend Kacey joins in when it comes to talking about all things TWD.
Once we got started, we hit the ground running and haven’t slowed down since. In the three months since we launched, we have produced 36 episodes of the podcast – including a livestream podcast recording of myself and Cat, to cover the series finale of Supernatural. In addition to The Walking Dead and Supernatural, we have covered season 2 of the Amazon Prime series The Boys, the first season of the Netflix series Cursed, and season one of the Sundance Channel/AMC+ series A Discovery of Witches. With the December announcement that all remaining 2020 and upcoming 2021 Warner Bros. films will stream to HBO Max, we were also able to cover the Christmas Day release of Wonder Woman 1984; that episode was released on New Year’s Day.
So, what’s next? January looks to keep us busy, as we plan to cover the following: A Discovery of Witches (season 2 premieres Jan. 9), American Gods (season 3 premieres Jan. 10), WandaVision (series premiere Jan. 15), The Watch (series premiere Jan. 3), and Legacies (season 3 premieres Jan. 21). We have a few other shows whose current seasons have already ended, but we may go back to re-visit them if time permits; we are also open to suggestions, so if you have something that you want us to cover, please let us know in the comments.
The plan is to also re-activate the blog section of this website, in order to continue to provide updates (such as this one) and Lorrie will be adding some book reviews in the next few weeks. Hopefully, with the rollouts of the vaccines for Covid-19, we can soon begin to resume such things as going to the movies, going back to conventions, etc., so that we can further explore our geekiness to our hearts’ desire.
If you’re looking to connect with us, you can find us on social media: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; you can also listen to us on most of the major podcast streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and iHeartRadio.
Here’s to a very geeky 2021!
